The main purpose of the Global Consciousness Project is scientific. We want to apply the best available methods to learn what we can about a hypothesized noosphere or global intelligence arising from interconnecting human intelligence. Much of what you will find on the website is devoted to describing and explaining the methods and the results of the scientific program.

Here we look at the other side of the equation. As a complement to the hard-edged rigor of the scientific method, we believe the creative, aesthetic impulse can also contribute to the challenges of mind and consciousness at both the local individual level and on the grand scale of the planet. The journals of poets and the pallettes of painters are filled with reverance for mother earth. The great wisdom traditions and the unspoiled natural attitudes of tribals and natives in all cultures speak of and often too a great spirit or a universe reflected in the waters, the forests, and the living beings of nature.
